The Moravian Church has stood for basic religious principles for more than 500 years. Through these years the church has often put into written form the precepts of its faith and practice in what is known as the Covenant for Christian Living.
Moravians recognize the example of Christ’s life and proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord. Living the Christian life depends not only on our own effort, but upon God our Father, who in Jesus Christ accepts us as heirs of God and strengthens and sustains us.
The Moravian Covenant for Christian Living is a clear arrangement and contemporary form of informtion which has long served the Moravian Church. Such a document can be an invaluable aid in the instruction of both new and present members, and a
meaningful guide in the expression of the Christian life.
The
Moravian Covenant in its original form was adopted by the Moravian
Church at Herrnhut, Saxony, as the Brotherly Agreement on May 12 of the
year that marked the Church’s spiritual renewal, 1727. The Covenant was
not intended to be a “discipline” forced on the congregation from above,
but rather an “agreement” into which the members entered voluntarily.
Most of the Covenant deals with Christian life, and is subtitled “Principles by Which We
Live and Bear Our Witness.”
This study series will come from several
resources including “Jesus Still Lead On”, an intro to Moravian belief
based on Craig Atwood’s studies of the Moravian Covenant for Christian
Living, and The Ground of the Unity and “Moravian 101: The Covenant for
Christian Living” Summer 2013 sermon series from Lititz Moravian Church,
Lititz, PA (Northern Province).
This series is indented for group study to understand more fully the foundation of the Moravian Church.

What do Christians in the Moravian Church believe? What do candidates for confirmation and church membership affirm? Over the centuries, the Christian church has instructed potential members (new or those ready to confirm their faith) through the use of scripture and catechisms. These catechisms are summarized expositions of the doctrine of the church. Like many other denominations, the Moravian Church uses catechisms to instruct new members.
This study series will focus on the "New" Moravian Catechism which is intended to be a summary of the Christian faith, to be used for the instruction of confirmands and new members of the Moravian Church.
While that guiding principle is important and helpful in living out our faith, this catechism is organized according to a similar concept that originated in the early Moravian Church. It is the concept of the essentials, ministerials and incidentals. This catechism reaffirms this early Moravian concept and makes it usable again for the church today.
These recordings were made in the Fall of 2021.
